Practice Makes Perfect It All Work

With each Power Word, practice is what brings the power to replace perfection. Practice is what makes each word become the new habit. Each time perfection creeps in, reach for one of these new power tools and defeat perfectionism (instead of perfectionism being the defeater).

The more any one of the words is practiced, the sooner it becomes habit. Try it out, rinse and repeat. Beware of perfectionism sneaking in as you create the habit. Anytime things don’t go to plan, say that’s OK and try again.

Proof is in the Practice

There are so many people, from all walks of life, that prove the power of practice. Many of those who have reached the top of their fields share words not boasting their greatness, instead rather sharing the stories of hard work and practice, that they did day after day, morning noon and night, for years that got them to that point. Some of my favorite quotes on practice are shared here.

“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” – Malcolm Gladwell.

“The only way to achieve mastery is through practice.” – James Clear.

“Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong.” – Unknown.

“Practice puts brains in your muscles.” – Sam Snead.

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.” – Mahatma Gandhi.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice! – Unknown Author

Give it a Go!

Pick your favorite power word and give it a go! From permission to productivity, or your purpose, promise or principles, pick a word, set the intention and do it for 30 days. Did one of the power words resonate more with you? Was there one that created a reaction for you? Here is what you do:

Step 1: Pick your word

Step 2: Create an intention or mantra on how you want to apply it in your life

Step 3: Write or print out the intention or mantra and place it on a mirror, your desk – somewhere prominent you will see it each day

Step 4: Download the screensaver or phone wallpaper from our website for that word – surround yourself with the support and messaging to make this habit a success

Step 5: When perfectionism creeps in, whether you notice it before, during or after it pops up, apply the power word. See how you can change the thoughts around perfection and shift to the new word.

Step 6: Repeat for at least 30 days

Recap of the Ten Words:

  1. Give ourselves Permission to start from where we are
  2. Recognizing the Progress we are making
  3. Celebrating our Productivity
  4. Knowing and owning our Purpose
  5. Making and keeping our Promise, to ourselves and others
  6. Standing firm in our Principles
  7. Creating a Plan
  8. Embracing Patience creating the pause
  9. And no matter what, the drive of Persistence to keep it all going

Practice: The Secret Weapon

I believe that everyone is limitless. Even if life hasn’t been all we thought it could or should be so far, practicing new habits, new thoughts, new ways of being, can start us on a new path to a new way of living.

Every day is a new day to get up and try again. Every day is a new day to reach into our toolbox and practice a new habit, a new way of doing things, taking all that has happened to us and around us as strength builders, and trying again.

Practice is the Path

Practice paves the way to make any of these 10 words a permanent part of our vocabulary, and a tool in our daily lives. Replacing perfection means we’re ready and willing to take on more, get up, try again, always knowing that that it’s about the path we take and making it a beautiful journey. Every day we get another chance to “Reach Up for the Sunrise… Feel the new day enter your life.”

To all my fellow 80s music fans and especially my Duran Duran fans, there was no question the band and the song I would end this series with. To anyone who doesn’t know Duran, or might be rolling their eyes at this one, I dare anyone to listen to this song and not want to get up and dance!

“Reach up for the sunrise

Put your hands into the big sky

You can touch the sunrise

Feel the new day enter your life.”
